Abstract

The world is faced with challenges presented by eroding natural resources as a sequel of perturbations in the environment due to rapid industrialization and population rise with reckless attitude towards the environment. Population growth is accompanied by the generation of an exponential quantity of waste generation. This compels authorities to manage the systems efficiently and strive for sustainable solutions through green practices including the diversion of waste from reaching landfill. Waste management lies at the cusp of SDGs associated with environment, health and well-being, responsible consumption and production. Waste generated from various segments in society demands agile interventions in all aspects of waste management activities requiring swift monitoring, data collection and ability to provide decision support. The dynamics in the entire chain of events in waste management are set to change through the implementation of Industry 4.0 (4IR) technologies. Understanding this technology change and its impact on waste management aspects requires critical inspections. This research article aims to provide a detailed analysis of work by eminent researchers towards the impact of 4IR technologies in the waste management sphere through a bibliographic analysis
