Abstract

In terms of self-image, China is not just another nation-state in the Westphalian sense. The aim of foreign policy is to return China to the status to which it is entitled and to vanquish the remnants of its victimhood. This chapter examines how this target influences the use of hard and soft power resources. It explains why, in geopolitical terms, the Chinese themselves feel encircled and vulnerable as well as how this influences the governments military posture.
