Abstract
No one ever said a clean energy transformation would be easy. The history behind establishing and expanding reliable electric power systems based on networked, large, central generation is engrained in operations and planning processes as well as the institutions and personnel that support them. A variety of large and small renewable energy sources have been entering the picture and displacing environmentally challenged resources. As the speed of change accelerates in various regions, traditional system management paradigms bend and creak to accommodate the trends.
