Abstract

REVIEW QUESTION / OBJECTIVE The quantitative objective is to compare the risk of preterm delivery in women with a history of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding or roux en Y gastric bypass More specifically, the objective is to compare: The risk of preterm delivery in women with a history of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding or roux en Y gastric bypass and a subsequent preterm delivery. INCLUSION CRITERIA Types of participants This review will consider studies that include women with a history of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding or roux en Y gastric bypass. To include as many studies as possible, no limits were placed on surgery to conception interval, number of pregnancies, body mass index limits, and age. Types of Exposure This review will consider studies that evaluate women who have undergone laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding or roux en Y gastric bypass prior to conception. Studies including a single bariatric surgical technique or a group of surgical methods of which the exposure types are a part will be included regardless of technique, type of surgical unit, or specialty of performing surgeon. Types of outcomes This review will consider studies that include the following outcome measures: preterm delivery as defined by live birth prior to 37 completed weeks of gestation. Premature rupture of membranes is a condition in which the amniotic sac ruptures prior to the completion of 37 weeks gestation. Delivery, vaginal or operative, occurs within 24 hours and is used as a surrogate measure for preterm delivery. As authors do not uniformly include the same types of pregnancy and neonatal outcomes in their research, studies addressing preterm delivery as an individual outcome measure or as part of a group of outcome measures will be included.
