The rings R( X) and R〈 X〉

Abstract

The rings R( X) and R〈 X〉 are investigated. Of particular importance is the question of when R( X) or R〈 X〉 is an arithmetical ring, a Prüfer ring, a Hilbert ring or a Euclidean ring. Answers are sought in terms of the base ring R.
