Abstract

This opinion piece was first published in Newsweek on February 5, 2021 at 5.30 AM, EST. Because of its importance for sexual and reproductive health and rights in Africa, the AJRH obtained the permission of Dr Natalia Kanem and Newsweek to publish it in this edition of the journal without alteration. We believe the restoration of funding to the UNFPA by the US government (which this journal suggested should happen in a December 2020 editorial 1 ) holds great promise for marginalized women and girls in Africa who look up to this unique global institution for social restitution and social justice. We salute the Biden administration for keeping faith with humanity, as this step will help the attainment of the UN sustainable development goals and those of UNFPA on achieving zero maternal deaths, gender-based violence and unmet need for contraception by 2030.
