Abstract

Pierre Bourdieu died in January 2002, leaving his last course at the College de France, entirely devoted to science, for posthumous publication. In the book's foreword he justifies his choice of subject and his desire to publish this text, despite its limitations, by the seriousness of the situation: today, he says, science is under threat. The independence of science, gradually secured from religious, political and even economic powers, he believes, is being seriously undermined. As he puts it:
