Abstract
Mitral valve repair is preferred to mitral valve replacement in patients with degenerative mitral valve disease (ie, mitral valve prolapse). Countless studies support this assertion, demonstrating that repair confers superior clinical outcomes when compared with mitral valve replacement. Whereas recent reports document that the majority of patients with degenerative mitral valve disease receive repair, a substantial proportion of patients with repairable valves undergo valve replacement. Surgeon experience and comfort with repair techniques certainly impact the likelihood of valve repair.
