Abstract

This chapter describes how preparation of a regional development plans for the regional park relates to the European Landscape Convention in terms of landscape identification and assessment, awareness-raising, landscape quality objectives and implementation. Regional parks varies in their objectives, structure and operations but generally described as a bottom-up approach to regional development that emphasises sustainable use and protection of landscape resources and supports broad environmental, economic and social value creation based on these resources. As the backbone of regional parks is the local and regional landscape, including everyday as well as outstanding landscape, it makes sense to study them in the context of the European Landscape Convention (ELC). The Snaefellsnes planning project receives the Biennial Planning Award of the Icelandic Planners Association in 2014. The award selection committee consider the strategic plan to be a good precedent for planning based on a comprehensive analysis of landscape, history and spirit of place.
