Yet, even when only the four blood groups were known, the facts were not entirely clear, and a controversy raged among workers in the field regarding the mechanism of heredity and a suitable method of designating the blood groups.1The genetic controversy was settled when Bernstein's theory of inheritance of the blood groups by multiple allelic genes was adopted as scientifically correct.
