Abstract
SummaryA placental organ culture system was designed to establish, using hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD) histochemical techniques whether, by re‐oxygenation, changes in placental villi induced by an antecedent period of hypoxia could be reversed. Forty‐three cultures were studied. Using 17β‐HSD substrates, reversal was achieved, but was time‐limited. No reversal was achieved using a 3β‐HSD substrate. Possible underlying subcellular mechanisms are discussed.
