The Retention of Identity and Autonomy among Canadian Indigenous People in the First World War

Abstract

By analyzing the experiences of Indigenous soldiers in the First World War, it becomes evident that Indigenous people faced increasing pressure to assimilate into mainstream Settler Canadian society. However, Indigenous soldiers were nevertheless able to retain and assert their identities and autonomy despite this pressure.
