Abstract
From 1975 through June 1990, 18 episodes of TTP occurred in 12 patients (2 males and 10 females, median age 37, range 16–54) and were treated at the Department of Hematology, University Hospital of Chieti, Pescara. During this period, three different treatment approaches were employed, consisting of early splenectomy, large volume plasma exchange and infusion of >10 mL/kg body wt frozen plasma. Simultaneously all of the patients received antiplatelet drugs and steroids. Overall, 1 patient responded to splenectomy, and complete remission occurred in 4 out of 7 cases treated with plasma exchange, whereas all 7 cases treated with fresh frozen plasma infusion, successfully responded. 1 out of 3 in the first group (splenectomy), 1 out of 5 in the second group (plasma exchange) and all 4 in the third group (plasma infusion), ultimately were longlasting survivors.
