Abstract

The power spectrum for sound forward-scattered by the ocean surface contains the discrete carrier frequency component with sidebands symmetrically positioned about the carrier. The scattered acoustic power in the sidebands is directly related to the ocean surface wave power spectrum through a response function which depends on the acoustic and surface wave frequencies. This response function has been calculated numerically for the case of small surface roughness and an omnidirectional source. The results are compared with relevant experimental results and other theoretical predictions.
