Abstract

The classical scheme of modulating the signal transmitted in optical communication systems can be implemented in various ways such as pulse amplitude modulation (PAM), pulse width modulation (PWM), pulse position modulation (PPM), etc. What will be proposed in this paper is another modulation scheme - pulse shape modulation (PSM) combined with 2–5 multi-pulse position modulation (MPPM). Different pulse shapes are applied in the pulse shaping process of the 2–5 MPPM scheme. The spectrum and bit error rate (BER) will be analyzed in the paper so that the detailed performance of different pulse shape methods can be compared. The relative advantages and disadvantages are discussed based on the spectrum and BER analysis.
