Abstract

Extensive research has been conducted to study the influence of silicone rubber, such as fillers reinforcement, electrical properties, and mechanical properties. However, fewer previous efforts have concentrated on the interaction of the silicone rubber as a sealant. The aim of the study was to investigate the interaction between the concrete substrate and silicone rubber sealant. The mechanism of action of silicone rubber sealant on the interface was introduced. The Scanning Electron Microscopy and Polarizing Microscope methods were employed to investigate the interface and the influence of the surface treatment of concrete was discussed. It is observed from the Scanning Electron Microscopy and PM images that it exists compact resinoid cover on the surface of concrete even after the adhesion failure test. The use of the primer and the surface treatment greatly increases the adhesive strength of silicone rubber from 0.11MPa to 0.53MPa.
