Abstract

Data fusion is considered an effective technique to eliminate redundant information to save energy and other resources in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This paper focuses on data fusion technique based on three-tiers WSNs for the urban real time traffic information monitoring. Firstly, we describe the system architecture, analyze urban real time traffic information and the data delivery flow. Subsequently, a hierarchical data fusion structure based on the three-tiers WSNs is presented, which consists of sensing fusion, gathering fusion and application fusion. Moreover, the flow of data fusion in different tier is studied detailedly. Lastly, the performance analysis has been carried out with network simulation between with our data fusion approach and without any data fusion technique. The result show that data fusion can improve the system performance effectively.
