Abstract

Every head and neck surgeon encounters difficult management decisions on a daily basis. Whether we are in the operating room, making rounds in the hospital, or seeing patients in an outpatient setting, we continually find ourselves at the boundaries of knowledge as we deal with the complex problems and numerous variables that each of our patients presents. We are all aware that today's research is tomorrow's clinical practice, and I believe that the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery has a major role to play in pushing outward the boundaries of medical knowledge and technology as it relates to diseases of the head and neck. The three purposes of the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery are (1) to promote and advance the knowledge of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of diseases of the head and neck; (2) to promote and advance research in diseases of the head
