Abstract

The lid wiper locate in the human inner lid border, and is distinct from the mucocutaneous conjunctiva junction (MCJ)/line of Marx. The main functions of lid wiper, which is in closest apposition with the globe are spread the tear film and maintain the integrity of the ocular surface. The term of lid wiper epitheliopathy (LWE) implies a disorder of the epithelial cells in the lid wiper. According to the reports recently published, incidence of LWE in dry eye patients and contact lens wearers is higher. The primary cause of LWE is thought to be increased friction between the lid wiper and ocular or anterior contact lens surface due to inadequate lubrication. However, clinical and fundamental research into LWE is still in its infancy and in many instances equivocal. The etiology, pathogenesis, pathology, the associations between LWE and other ocular diseases, examination and treatment of LWE needs to be research further.
