Abstract

AbstractWhy did Anne Bronte ill at school in Mirfield and surrounded by Church of England clergy send for James La Trobe (1802-97) a Moravian minister whom she had never met? This is explored and the religious climate considered with an estimate of his likely influence on Anne. An outline of La Trobe's life and background is interwoven. The text is closely based on a talk given at the Bronte Parsonage Museum, Haworth, on 1 July 1998.
