Abstract

A special X-ray table was constructed† for the United Cambridge Hospitals and has been in use over the last two years. It is of interest to consider the reasons for the design of this table which was intended for fluoroscopy and for radiography under screen control. The requirements of such a table can be considered under three headings: (1) Positioning of the patient. (2) Observation. (3) Recording. Positioning of the patient includes everything one does to put the patient in the correct position for observation, i.e. all the movements of the table, tube and screen carriage, and the movement of the patient on the table. Clearly, the requirements vary according to the examination which has to be carried out. The table was primarily designed for barium meals and enemas but is useful for many other types of examination. A table tilt of 90 deg. each way is a great advantage for myelography.
