Abstract

The main strategic objective of The Museu da República (Republic Museum) in Rio de Janeiro is to strengthen citizenship. The environment is, therefore, a major preoccupation for the museum. For this reason, the Republic Museum's Social and Environmental Programme (‐) was developed. The programme is a series of articulated actions based on different perspectives (landscape‐related, environmental, heritage‐related, educational and archaeological) with the aim of developing processes to redefine heritage and establish new institutional and behavioural patterns in accordance with environmental legislation. The ‐ is organised into four stages, which include the creation of the Social and Environmental Education Centre and the implementation of a Project of Appreciation, Revitalisation and Preservation of the Republic Museum Historic Garden. It is the first programme of this type of the entire Brazilian museum structure. The objective of this article is to present the development process and implementation of the Republic Museum's Social and Environmental Programme, as well as its structure and the results that have already been achieved.
