Abstract

SUMMARY The paper provides further data on the lambing performance and mating seasonality of six British breeds of sheep and their offspring located at Pasto, Colombia, S. America (lat. I° N.). There were marked breed and year differences in the percentage of ewes lambing in both the “Mountain” and “Lowland” groups. In the “ Mountain” group, comprising Welsh Mountain, Scottish Blackface and North Country Cheviot ewes, there was a gradual but significant advancement in the onset of mating activity in the imported ewes, and the offspring showed the same trend. This was not apparent in the “Lowland” group which included Romney Marsh, Dorset Down and Border Leicester ewes. In the Romney Marsh subgroups, there were significant differences between the parent and offspring subgroups in the onset of mating.
