Abstract

Love and sex seem to be exclusive to young adults, in real life as well as in films. The old, especially with regard to affections outside of the marriage relationship, are all too easily neglected. Even though many films represent love between elderly people, this is usually expressed in superficial and marginal ways. Since the 1990s, it has been widely acknowledged that the problem of aging affects not only China but also Europe. As a result, more elderly-themed films are being produced than before. Naturally, the cinematic depictions of intimacy and desire carry different cultural meanings. This paper analyses four typical elderly-themed Chinese and European films and compares them using critical discourse analysis. It consists of three parts: comparisons of the representation of love and sexuality in fictional films of, firstly, old women and, secondly, old men; and, finally, an effort to create a deeper understanding of films as a reflection of aging in cultural ideologies.
