Abstract

The 'right' and 'wrong' items in a verbal-discrimination list were re-paired after training to a criterion of 12/16, one perfect trial, or three perfect trials and with subjects either fully informed about the re-pairing or told nothing about it. Re-pairing led to a significant increase in errors compared to continuing with the same pairs, but only when learning had been to a criterion of one perfect or three perfect trials. The decrement was also mainly restricted to the first transfer trial and was unrelated to information about the re-pairing.
