Abstract

Temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen data are analysed to study the renewal of Labrador Sea Water. It is suggested that renewal occurs in winter in the central Labrador Sea when cooled surface water sinks to intermediate depths along isopycnal surfaces which rise to meet the sea surface because of the cyclonic circulation of the sea. The surface water which eventually ends up with the properties of Labrador Sea Water is a mixture of the warm, saline Atlantic Water of the West Greenland Current and the cold, less saline polar water of the Labrador Current. An apparent instance of deep convective renewal to 1500 meters in 1967 is discussed briefly.
