Abstract

The reported results concerning the effect of calcitonin on the kidney in man have been controversial. In the presence of the parathyroid glands it is impossible to evaluate whether the changes in the renal excretion pattern depend upon a direct action of cal-citonin on the kidney or an indirect stimulation of the parathyroids. To rule out the effect of the parathyroid hormone, we therefore followed the blood levels and the urinary excretion of calcium, magnesium, phosphate, sodium, and potassium in 4 hypo-parathyroid patients, given a single injection of 100 MRC U of porcine calcitonin.
