Abstract

A novel method, called the crossover technique, has been devised for the remote determination of the surface temperature of planets, satellites, and asteroids having a negligible atmosphere. The method is discussed using new spectra of Mars as an example, and it is shown how it might be extended to other solar system objects. The accuracy of the method, both absolutely and in comparison to other methods, is also considered.
