Abstract

The symbolism in Blake"s work lends itself readily to manifold interpretation. This is in no small measure due to the symbolism that pervades Blake"s work generally; he not only was a poet and artist, he was also ? in his own eyes ? a prophet. As a result, he developed his own cosmology. While some of this cosmology remains obscure, one of Blake"s central goals ? that the world be seen with Imagination and not via the tenets of empiricism or “natural” religion ? is one which helps understanding of his works. For Blake, Imagination opens the portals of perception.
