Abstract

Among the most elemental, perennial, and pivotal questions are these: What is nature? What is human nature? What is the place of humans in nature? What should be the place of humans in nature? Historically, ecological anthropology has addressed these questions in various ways and degrees, and continues to do so, especially the third question. The present chapter explores how spiritual ecology can contribute to this pursuit. Basically, spiritual ecology reveals aspects that have tended to be ignored or neglected, but that are increasingly important given the ongoing environmental crisis. First, however, spiritual ecology in general must be outlined.
