Abstract

SUMMARY 1 Exfoliative cytological studies of the urine were performed upon 298 patients. There were 199 (66.8 per cent) negative reports including 2 false negatives with submucosal tumours in the bladder. 2 Forty-seven patients (15.8 per cent) had atypical cells in the urinary sediment. None has developed tumours during a review period of at least a year after the abnormal report. All these patients had stones, infective or obstructive lesions in the urinary tract. 3 Eighteen patients (6 per cent) had suspicious cells in the urine, all developed tumours in the urinary tract. 4 Thirty-four patients (11.4 per cent) had malignant cells in the urine. There was 1 false positive in a man with schistosomiasis. 5 The value of urinary cytology as; a screening test for the detection of bladder cancer in new patients, industrial workers at risk, review of old cases of bladder malignancy and the detection of pre-cancerous lesions in the bladder is discussed.
