Abstract

We emphasize the relevance of mesonic degrees of freedom in the microscopic description of nuclear systems. We present first the derivation of the nucleon-nucléon potential in terms of pion exchange. The structure of the electromagnetic current in nuclei is then deduced and compared with experimental results from electron scattering in the few-body systems. The corrections to this description at high density, which involve many-body forces, are presented. The guiding principle in all these derivations is the modification of the nucleon and pion structure when they are embedded in the nuclear medium.
