Abstract
The New Testament documents make it more than clear that there was difference of opinion about identity of Jesus, even when he was still on earth. Some regarded him as John the Baptist, others as Elijah, others as one of the prophets and also as a messiah. The search for historical Jesus is a historical issue, it concerns historical construction and should be understood in this way. It concerns the identity of man of flesh and blood, Jesus the Galilean. Historical Jesus research has played no significant role in South African theology. This chapter deals with the problem of historical Jesus from the perspective of doing theology in 'new' South Africa. The chapter deals with the problem of the identity and significance of Jesus, current issues in historical Jesus research, current images of Jesus in South African christologies and possible ways out of the dilemma of opposing views on Jesus. Keywords: christologies; Galilean; historical Jesus research; New Testament; South Africa
