Abstract

SUMMARY A survey conducted in two veterinary schools suggests lecturers believe A-level in biology is more useful than in physics or chemistry but not as useful as mathematics. Students find A-level biology and chemistry equally useful, but biology more useful than mathematics or physics. Heterogeneity of biological background does raise problems in the first year and there may be a case for a common biology syllabus.
