Abstract

The intravenous injection of crude papaya latex extract (crude papain) into young rabbits is followed by the appearance, in blood and urine, of a mucopolysaccharide, resembling in chemical and physical properties chondroitin sulfates A and C. The time course of appearance and disappearance correlates well with the gross and histological changes in cartilages of ear and elsewhere. Only a small fraction of the mucopolysaccharide which enters the blood stream is accountable in the urinary excretion. Differences of response in old rabbits have been observed and possible relationships to the process of aging are discussed. The possible activity in crude papaya extract responsible for the observed histological and chemical effects is discussed.
