Abstract
It is shown that for separable potentials of rank two fixing the deuteron wave functions makes the triton binding energy insensitive to both the on-shell and off-shell T-matrix elements down to E/sub lab/ approx equal 20 MeV. It is concluded that the deuteron wave function and the low-energy phase shift are the determining factors for the triton binding energy, and that the deuteron wave function is of greater importance than the phase shift.
