Abstract

The relative dipole strengths of the 00°1–10°0 and 00°1–02°0 transitions in the CS 2 and CO 2 molecules are considered from the viewpoint of a simple anharmonic model in which both cubic and quartic normal-coordinate force constants are admitted. Terms in the dipole-moment expansion up to cubic in the normal coordinates are also taken into account. It is predicted that the dipole strength of the 00°1–02°0 transition in CS 2 is about one eighth that of the 00°1–10°0 transition and that the former should be observable in a CS 2 laser.
