The relationship of sandstone’s strength with mineral content and petrographic characteristics in Sungai Tekai, Jerantut, Pahang

Abstract

In this paper, the study was conducted at Sungai Tekai, Jerantut to investigate the relationship between mineralogical characteristics and mechanical properties of rock. The type of rock found is sedimentary sandstones rocks. To study and determine the mineralogical characteristics of the rocks, a thin section of the rocks sample was prepared. Some minerals found abundance in the rocks are quartz, feldspar, carbonate matrix and cement, calcite, rock fragment and accessory minerals. sixteen rock samples were collected then tested to determine point load strength index, uniaxial compressive strength, slake durability and alkali silica reactivity. The relationships between these properties and mineralogical characteristics are described by simple regression analyses and bar chart. This study concluded by good correlation between The alkali silica reactivity and durability index, while the correlation between The alkali silica reactivity and point load strength and uniaxial compression strength was not significantly.
