Abstract

The relationship of the Health Locus of Control (HLC) scale to preventive behaviors for cancer was measured in a population of school teachers and administrators. No relationship between HLC (either alone or in combination with health value) and health behaviors was demonstrated. Some relationships were found between HLC and health beliefs in the areas of vulnerability to cancer and other diseases, efficacy of preventive behaviors, and anxiety about cancer. The results raise questions about the validity of the HLC scale for determining preventive health behaviors.
