Abstract

A simple empirical model is described in which monthly above-ground biomass increments are related to estimates of the amount of short-wave energy absorbed by the canopy. The efficiency with which photosynthetic energy is used is a function of soil water status. Energy absorption and water use are functions of current above-ground biomass. The model is tested against three above-ground Pinus radiata D.Don biomass data sequences from climatologically different sites. The sensitivity of the model to changes in its constituent relationships is explored as an indication of areas to which future studies should be directed.
