Abstract

Rationale: Plasma selenium (PSe) has been demonstrated to fall by 25% in 48 hours after elective knee surgery, but rise without supplementation after the SIR has resolved1. Erythrocyte selenium (ESe) is an alternative marker of selenium status that is not affected by the SIR. This study compared PSe and ESe at increasing CRP concentrations in patients presenting for nutritional assessment.
