Abstract
Summary The recruiting responses following stimulation of the nucleus centrum medianum were recorded at the cortex during attentive wakefulness, relaxed wakefulness, sleeping and interview by the surgeon. The amplitude and the waxing and waning of those responses did not show any changes at the various levels of consciousness. No detectable behavioral alteration or special psychiatric experience was associated with the recruiting response caused by stimulation of the nucleus centrum medianum. During high frequency stimulation of the nucleus centrum medianum, EEG changed to the arousal pattern and patients felt a- fearful sensation or intractable pain all over the body associated with fear-like crouching behavior. The patient's consciousness was not altered and neither seizure wave nor any after discharge could be detected after stimulation of the nucleus. According to these data, (1) The appearance and amplitude of recruiting response following stimulation of the nucleus centrum medianum has no relationship to the levels of consciousness and these responses are not associated with epileptic status, (2) The behavior pattern and electroencephalogram show very great differences between high and low frequency stimulation of the nucleus., and (3) the nucleus centrum medianum has no important role in maintaining consciousness.
