Abstract

A simple relationship between superficial work and surface stress that depends solely on Poisson's ratio is derived. The derivation utilises the little-known “Quadrant Theorem”, the basis of which, in the forms used by Rayleigh and Orowan, is discussed. Results using bulk Poisson's ratio are presented. The limitations of the simple relationship are identified, and an extension that explicitly includes surface terms is proposed. The novel set of surface mechanical parameters required by this relationship is identified and computational methods for their evaluation are suggested.
