Abstract

The present study explores the relationship between Socioeconomic Status(SES), parental reading belief and family linguistic environment based on a sample of 352 parents of preschoolers aged 36 - 6o months old. Findings show that parents’ educational background, parents’ professions, family income correlate positively with parental reading belief and family linguistic environment. However, parents’ professions correlate only with their educational background and income instead of reading belief. Maternal profession shares a positive relation with all the factors in family linguistic environment while paternal profession only correlates with books volume, total book-reading numbers and reading frequency. Parental reading belief predicts family language learning environment. The earlier parents start parent-child book reading, the better to cultivate preschooler’s reading interest and motivation.
