Abstract

The concentration of some plant growth substances was studied in healthy and citrus exocortis viroid (CEV)-infected Gynura aurantiaca DC plants. No changes in the levels of abscisic acid were observed. As a result of infection by the viroid, an auxin-like substance of unknown chemical nature was formed, whereas the concentrations of auxin-like substance(s) with the same chromatographic properties as indolacetic acid remained unchanged. A significant decrease in the levels of endogenous gibberellins (probably GA 3 and/or GA 1) was observed in CEV-infected plants. This decrease may have been associated with the stunting exhibited by infected plants. Application of exogenous GA 3 increased the relative infectivity index of CEV in G. aurantiaca when applied starting at 7 days after inoculation.
