Abstract

Our objective was to evaluate changes in blood flow (BF) in the genian region in patients submitted to chemotherapy (CT) with different types of cancer at high risk of developing oral mucositis (OM) and relating the BF with pain and degree of OM. BF measurement was performed using laser Doppler flowmetry before the start of CT and every 3 days (total: 7 reviews). Pain was assessed using a visual analog scale and OM using the World Health Organization/Oral Mucositis Assessment Scale. The sample included 7 patients (2 men/5 women) with average age of 50.71 years. The worst manifestations of OM-WHO/OM-OMAS occurred between the second and fourth assessments. There was an increase in BF over time, except for the third assessment, which coincided with the worst manifestation of OM and pain. The worst manifestation of OM-WHO/OM-OMAS and the worst pain were related to lower BF.
