Abstract

Objective To lower the incidence of brain damage by exploring the risk factors for neonatal hypoglycemia. Methods The clinical data on 276 cases of neonatal hypoglycemia were analyzed.Blood glucose level, hypoglycemia duration, and association of hypoglycemia with brain damage were analyzed. Results Premature infant, small for gestational age infant, anoxia asphyxia, infection, maternal diabetes, and abnormal glucose tolerance test were the main risk factors for brain damge in neonatal hypoglycemia( P<0.05,OR > 1,95% CI > 1 ).Their ORvalue and 95% CI were 2.52 ( 1.13-3.23 ),2.37 ( 1.21 - 3.16 ),2.08 ( 1.56 - 3.74 ),1.78 ( 1.47 - 3.89 ),2.45 ( 1.43 - 3.84 ),and 1.84 ( 1.33 - 3.06 ),respectively. The positive rate of Brain damage occurred in 42 of 276 infants with neonatal hypoglycemia( 15.2% ),and was negatively associated with low blood glucose levels ( r=- 0.04,P < 0.05 ) and positively with hypoglycemia duration ( r=0.05,P < 0.05 ).The lower the blood glucose level and the longer the hypoglycemia duration, the higher the incidence rate of brain damge. Conclusions For the high-risk infants, blood glucose should be routinely detected to control hypoglycemia swiftly and shorten duration of hypoglycemia.Simultaneously,in order to reduce brain damage and neurological sequelae,we should enhance education on perinatal health to monitor and prevent neonatal hypoglycemia.
