Abstract
This study examines the relationship between interest rates and inflation during the prewar period. The results of all empirical analyses are clearly at variance with the Fisher hypothesis while supporting the ‘inverted Fisher hypothesis’ proposed by Carmichael and Stebbing (1983). This result gives rise to some serious doubts on the overall performance of the former hypothesis.
