Abstract

SUMMARY This article explores the relationship between caregiver support groups and the marker framework of family caregiving. Group workers knowledgeable about the various stages or markers in the career of a caregiver and the issues which precipitate moving to a new marker are better able to assist the group and its members. The five markers most relevant to caregiver support groups are: (1) self-definition as a caregiver, (2) performing personal care, (3) seeking assistance and formal service use, (4) consideration of nursing home placement, and (5) termination of the caregiving role. The marker framework is a valuable tool to aid group workers in effectively marketing groups, selecting members and enhancing support of the group.
