Abstract

The article deals with the relations between Czech and Slovenian gymnastic clubs in the 1860s and early 1870s. The history of the launch and the spread of the Sokol (Czech and Slovenian for a «falcon») movement is analyzed from the perspective of cultural transfers. Special emphasis has been given to the mission of Czech gymnastic instructor Jan Zdeněk Veselý, who worked in Ljubljana from 1870 to 1872. The research is based on the analysis of Czech, Slovenian and German newspapers and magazines, as well as other primary sources.
